On June 2nd, my country pays respects to one of the greatest heroes from our history, Hristo Botev. Today, 136 years have passed since his heroic death.
He was the leading initiator of the April Uprising which lead to the Russo-Turkish war and subsequently, the Bulgarian liberation from the Ottoman Empire.
He sacrificed his life on June 2nd, 1876 in order to attract the European attention to the suffering of our people and liberate us after 5 centuries of Ottoman domination.
He, who falls fighting for freedom, does not die. You are alive in our hearts.
